Remembrance Sunday
Usually the 2nd Sunday in November, we remember those who gave up their lives in war and conflict. At St Mary’s we have a solemn Communion service with a roll-call of honour at the War Memorials in church for both world wars. At St Alban’s we are usually joined by young people’s uniformed organisations for our Parade Service. Please check the calendar for details of the service at each church.
Christ the King
Held on the Sunday before Advent Sunday, we celebrate Jesus as King of Heaven and King of our lives. Join us for a Communion service at St Mary’s and a more informal worship and praise service at St Alban’s.
Penitential Seasons
Two periods in the year, Advent and Lent are reserved by the Church as seasons of penitence when we reflect on our lives as Christians and seek to make changes so that we better follow the example of Jesus.Advent
Advent is the 4 weeks before Christmas day starting with Advent Sunday which is usually the first Sunday in December or last one in November. Please check the calendar for exact dates.
Lent
We prepare for Easter in a solemn period of reflection in the 6 weeks leading up to it. The season starts on Ash Wednesday with a service of Communion with ‘ashing’ in which our foreheads are anointed with the cross of Jesus in ash to remember his suffering for our sakes and for us to resolve to correct all that is wrong in our lives. During Lent our Discovery Groups [hyperlink] may study special material related to Lent.
